self-portrait tuesday 2/6/06: all of me

SPT 2/7/06: all of me
selfportraittuesday.blogspot.com/

when i was in sixth grade
my friend's older sister,
who was a cheerleader,
told me that i should
consider having my jaw broken
so that my chin didn't stick out
so much.

later, in high school,
i was teased about it
and made to feel like a
freak.

when i was in my twenties,
someone told me that i
was beautiful when one looked
at me from the front
but from the side
i wasn't.

over the years i have thrown
so many pictures away
because of my profile.

not until my mid-thirties
did i embraced my
moon-shaped face.

now, close to forty
i can't believe i didn't
just hold my chin up high
and laugh at them
for their shallowness.

  1. I love the chin too, girl. I'm POSITIVE it was revered as goddess-like in some culture.

  2. Aren't we lucky that sixth grade is only one, really hard year of life? Beauty shines from you!

  4. It takes us sometimes SO long to realize that those that laughed at us were the ones with problems. Some folk never learn this incredibly valuable lesson.

  5. I'm glad you finally embraced your chin; it's a lovely chin.

I'm 26 and have not yet learned to embrace my nose. I still throw away pictures because of my profile.

I think, though, that I'm starting to see the beauty in my nose. Every so often I look at my profile in the mirror and think, it's not an ugly nose. It's long and the bump in the middle makes it look unique. As a matter of fact, it's a dignified nose.

Then I look at my profile the next day and think, don't fool yourself, girlfriend-big is what it is.

  6. Well, it's a fabulous chin.

I haven't done my All of Me SP yet, but I wanted to do mine about my chin too.

  7. Isn't it funny--how we see ourselves? When I saw this pic of you on the spt sight I thought "Wow, look at that gorgeous woman--I don't see anything wrong with her, I wonder why it's up for this theme this week?" I think your jawline is beautiful and strong.

Embrace your chin. I barely have one. My mouth leads right into my neck.

  10. the oddest thing about this picture is that before i read what u had to write and just looked at the picture, I thought to myself that i really liked your chin...and then u went on to talk about how it was hated. WOW! it is crazy what people think and say to one another...it is really a great photo too!! :)
