i am continuing with purpose.

nothing puts you in the holiday spirit
like a christmas concert.
especially when small children are performing
in front of an audience of elders.
so sweet, it was.
i am officially in caroling mode.

fortieth birthday celebration.
turkey harvesting.
egg collecting.
hair infused with campfire smell (one of my favorites things ever).
sailor jerry rum.
and cousins.
mix it all up and create a shindig on the best little farm near the mason dixon line.
(fyi: fun does run in my family…)

let's play "good guy/bad guy"
sounds good.
mama, you have to be the bad guy, ok?
and i am going to win. because the good guy should win, right?
yes, sweetpea. that is how it should be.
(and i ended it there. i didn't have the heart to tell him that real life isn't like that.)

papa had to work tonight
managing the restaurant
full of lovers in love.
so we sent this to him
so he would feel some love, too.

he still calls me mama.
i can still scoop him up and
hold him in my arms.
and he still sleeps with his face smooshed up against mine.
he reminds me that he is not a baby anymore,
(even though he lets me call him "baby").
he makes up songs as a soundtrack to his daily events.
he loves skippy jon jones, bacon, and dinosaurs.
he builds animals and monsters out of legos, writes his name,
crack an egg like a pro, and sets the table for our family meals.
he is a magician, a warrior, a chef, and a bumblebee.
he is a mighty hunter of (mama and papa) bears,
a powerful superhero, and a fierce pirate who knows his letter sounds.
his many personalities are: bob, fudge, una-tuna,
mama's windup-toy, and joe-the-robot.
he is a sucker for chocolate and a good drumbeat.
and he is going to be four at the end of july.
four, people...

dear strawberries,
thank you for finally making that trip
through the maryland soil and onto
my table.
it seemed like it took forever
but you are worth the wait.
thank you for gently asking the apples
and bananas to step aside as you took their place.
thank you for confirming that all of the
white-centered impersonators were only after
my hard-earned money;
taking advantage of my weakened state due to
the winter produce blues.
and baby...you are the real deal.
sweet.
rubylicious through and through.
perfect. blemishes and all.
i have missed you!
and i know you can't stay long but
this short visit means so much to me.
fondly, kathleen

fourth grade students from watkins elementary school in d.c..
video credit goes to the washington post.
this video made me cry,
for the loss of a great leader;
for the pride these children have;
for the hope of peace.
we have come a long way.
we still have even further to go.
the hateful, racist comments that were left on this site
sicken me.
it saddens me that there are people, of all color,
who are raising their children to think that
racial prejudice is something that needs to continue.
there is hope,
as can be seen on this clip,
that our children will carry on the dream
of dr. king.
spread the word.
walk the walk.
open your heart.
it's never too late.

it is 3:30 in the morning.
presents are wrapped.
stockings filled.
boy still sleeping.
our boy is going to
freak
out
in the morning when he
finds the empty plate
and the stuffed stocking
and the presents.
hopefully santa will bring
us coffee in four hours when
babychop wakes up.
this is going to be good, people.
merry christmas to all.
and to all, a good night.
taken on 34th street in hampden.

after watching this,
then you are hopeless.

if you need a little extra help,

each time he does this,
i am a puddle.
mush.
done.
my heart might just explode the first time he says,
"i love you, mama"

liam won't stop growing.
i am trying to savor every moment
yet they seem to fly by.
with each stage there is a different sound he makes,
or expression on his face,
or feat that he has accomplished.
i don't want to forget any of it.
this movie was taken three months ago.
he seems so much smaller than he is now, at one year.
sigh.
i love this baby so much.
